Did you know Belgium is the Comic Capitol of Europe? See Tin Tin, the Smurfs and Satisfy all of your Comic Book Aesthetic Travel Wishes

Did you know Belgium is the birthplace of Tin Tin & The Smurfs?

Many people may not know that Brussels is actually the Comic Capitol of Europe. Several well known comics were born here and there is tribute payed to them on almost every corner. As part of a special project that started in the ‘90s murals began filling the city dedicated to different comics and famous characters.

Three Ways to Enjoy Comic Culture in Brussels

There are many ways to engage in this hidden side of Brussels - here are my top recommendations to make the most of your visit.

1. Visit the Comic Arts Museum

If you want to discover all of the history and secrets behind Belgium’s comic history, I highly recommending spending some time inside the Comic Arts Museum. The museum is conveniently located in Rue Neuve near a metro station.

2. Wander the Comic Art Route

If you enjoy scavenger hunts and urban exploring, I recommend spending an afternoon searching the Comic Art Route for your favorite mural. There is a network of over 55 murals throughout the city including easy start locations such as the Tin-Tin Mural just off of Grand Place and the Smurf Passage near Bruxelles-Centraal Train Station.

Take a Tour - Sometimes it’s best to explore with the help of a professional.

  • Keep it Active and try the Brussels Comic Running Tour.

  • Keep it Classic and try the Brussels Comic Walking Tour.

3. Explore Brussels’s Comic Shops

If you are an avid comic reader or hoping to get into reading comic books, stop in one of Brussels’s many comic book stores. I highly recommend La Boutique Tintin and The House of Comics.
